US Bangladesh Advisory Council Recognizes Congressman Joseph Crowley along with BAPAF

August 19, 2009 - Washington, DC: The U.S. Bangladesh Advisory Council, in conjunction with a New
York based group, Bangladeshi American Public Affairs Front (BAPAF) today hosted a reception and
dinner in honor of Congressman Joseph Crowley (NY-7), co-chair of the Congressional Bangladesh
Caucus.

The purpose of the event was to recognize Congressman Crowley’s tireless dedication to issues
concerning Bangladesh and to express gratitude to him for championing Bangladesh ’s policy
interests in the U.S. Congress. Congressman Crowley is serving his sixth term representing New
York ’s 7th Congressional District, which includes parts of the Bronx and Queens .

The event was attended by more than 80 constituents from Congressman Crowley’s district,
including Bangladeshi-American professionals, entrepreneurs, journalists, and others. The event
was covered by ATN Bangla, NTV and other media outlets.

The organizers recognized Congressman Crowley’s leadership in facilitating Congressional
delegation visits to Bangladesh , as well as championing issues over the years such as democracy
in Bangladesh , duty free quota free trade benefits, environmental protection, immigration policy
reform and other critical issues related to Bangladesh ’s development and welfare of Bangladeshi
immigrants. Mr. Crowley promised to continue to strengthen U.S.- Bangladesh relations and said that
he would work closely with USBAC as well as New York groups on policy issues related to
Bangladesh ’s advancement.

Congressman Joseph Crowley serves in the leadership of the U.S. House of Representatives as a
Chief Deputy Whip – making him the highest-ranking New York member in the leadership of the
House Democratic Caucus. He also sits on two prestigious committees in the House – the
Committee on Ways and Means and the Committee on Foreign Affairs.

The Committee on Ways and Means oversees the nation’s tax and trade policies, as well as Social
Security and Medicare. Congressman Crowley has been serving on the Committee on Foreign Affairs
for more than 10 years. His district is home to the most ethnically diverse population in the nation and
has a significant concentration of Americans of Bangladeshi origin.

Congressman Crowley was also recently elected Chair of the New Democrat Coalition, an influential
coalition in the House of Representatives.
